File This Under "W"

For Whatever.
And I, to this day, believe that if that would have happened in Orange County, California, if that would have happened in South Beach, Miami, it would have been a different response.
Nawlins Mayor Ray Nagin, commenting on his belief that the post-Katrina aid has been slowed by racism.

What a jerk.

But he's right: it wouldn't have happened in those other places. But not because of racism.

First of all, it wouldn't have happened in Miami or Orange County, because those places 1) aren't below sea level, 2) didn't ignore for years the risk of severe flooding and 3) have reasonably competent governments that have made serious preparations for natural disasters.

And second of all, the people running Orange county and Miami (and living there) wouldn't be taking every opportunity to blame other people for their own problems.

I think that he got elected because he is black. Is that racism? How can someone as inept as Nagin get reelected. Remember all those buses that never got used, and Nagin had them at this disposal?

Some folks never assume any responsibility for their actions or lack of it. Why did he and the governor of Louisiana do something before Katrina hit? Why wasn't the city prepared for a big hurricane, as one had read many times? So now the blame is placed on others instead of his and others ineptitude.
He's just like that black mayor of D.C. who was reelected despite being involved in drugs and taking money. They deserve what they elect.
