Marlins Make Commitment
I could say a lot about the Marlins' signing of star shortstop Hanley Ramirez to a long-term contract.
I would, but Greg Cote nails it. Every single sentence.

The thing is that everybody on the outside of the franchise simply speculates too much about what is going on inside. To me it's obvious. We have a relatively shallow-pocketed owner that wants to win but also doesn't have the resources most other teams have (like a publicly financed stadium that generates gobs of cash for the franchise). I think he would have liked to have kept Cabrera but it made no financial sense to commit 50% of your payroll to one player. The Marlins come out of this Ramirez deal looking like big spenders but the reality is that they did this deal because they got Hanley relatively cheap. Cabrera got 7 years, $150 million. Hanley just got 6 years, 70 Million. That's a huge difference and Hanley probably has more upside than Cabrera.
I want to see the shovel go into the ground in little Havana then I'll breathe a sigh of relief.
Very true Henry, very true.
