The Limbaugh Challenge

Via Paul Ibrahim comes this "challenge" from a LA Times column for liberals to - you know - actually tune in to Rush Limbaugh's show.
I listen to Limbaugh every chance I get, and I have never heard the man utter a single racist, hateful or stupid word. Do I always agree with him? Of course not. I'm a conservative; I think for myself. But Limbaugh, by turns insightful, satiric, raucously funny and wise, is one of the best voices talking about first principles and policy in the country today.

Therefore, I am throwing down my gauntlet at your quivering liberal feet. I hereby issue my challenge -- the Limbaugh Challenge: Listen to the show. Not for five minutes but for several hours: an hour a day for several days. Consider what he has to say -- the real policy material under the jokes and teasing bluster. Do what your intellectual keepers do not want you to do and keep an open mind. Ask yourself: What's he getting at? Why does he say the things he says? Why do so many people of goodwill -- like that nice Mr. Klavan -- agree with him?

The mainstream media (a.k.a. the Matrix) don't want you to listen to Limbaugh because they're afraid he'll wake you up and set you free of their worldview. You don't want to listen to him because you're afraid of the same thing.

Don't believe me? Well, then, gird your loins. Gather your courage. Accept the Limbaugh Challenge. See what happens.

I dare you.
Alright my liberal friends out there (and I know who you are), what do you say?

I listen to Rush 2-3 times a week, sometimes more if I'm driving around town. Most times, end to end.

He's the laughingstock of the Republican Party. And I do laugh when I listen to him and his callers. I'm not sure whether he hates women or people of color more, but he's a perfect fit for Republican ideology.

Keep him. He'll serve you well in 2010 and 2012.

Rick,

According to you what is Republican ideology? Just curious, given the fact I'm a Republican and I've never listened to Rush.

What are the foundations of conservatism, LV?

You don't know?

Rick, you don't answer a question with a question. Go ahead, answer it.

Perhaps you missed the according to you part of the question Rick.

He didn't miss it, LV. Even Rick realizes when he's in way over his head. Sometimes.

I get it, Robert. This is your "gotcha" moment, right? Pat yourself on your back, my friend. It doesn't take much, I guess.

I can think of 4 principles right off the top of my head. Here's two of them: a strong defense, minimal government intrusion in one's life.

Maybe you can round out the list with the others. Or you can continue to play your little game of "gotcha" since it apparently gives you a warm fuzzy.

You make it too easy, Rick. Instead of honest and respectful debate you choose to mis-characterize and insinuate that Republican ideology is about racism and hating women. You might be able to get away with that over in the safe confines of your blog, but not here.

So did I get the two "right," Robert? I mean, after all, it was kind of a test, right?

Do you need two more? Or do you still think you "got me?"

Maybe I missed something there buuuuuut, wasn't it me who asked the question?

In any case this is not a test Rick, it's a simple question that requires a simple answer: what you think is Republican ideology.

Man you are so perseguido ...meaning you always think every one has a hidden agenda with you. Like they are always out to get you or something. Life has taught me one thing Rick, el ladron juzga por su condicion, basically you judge situations based on your own behavior - meaning if you think people are out to get you it's because you are out to get people.

I don't mean to criticize you, but really Rick I ask a question, Robert makes a comment, and next thing I know I'm totally taken out of the conversation.

Whatever.

Yes, you asked a question, LV. I then asked if you knew the principles yourself and that's when Robert jumped in.

Thanks, for the analysis. It's something that I will consider with everyone else's opinion of who I am.

Remember, this post was about Rush. I answered the question in my comment. What followed was some back and forth between me and you before Robert felt the need to jump in and take the first swing.

I'm not imagining that, LV.

Rick, what do you expect when you open the comments with a screed on how Limbaugh is racist and hates women, and is a perfect fit for Republican ideology. Talk about setting a tone...

Then when LV askes you a question, you turn it immediately around on her, as if her question wasn't relevant in the least (it was).

Then I call you out for both your comments, and you claim that it's a "gotcha" moment for me. Let me clue you in on something here, Rick. This comment thread and blog as a whole serves as a way to communicate and discuss topics, not as a vehicle for me to get kicks out of beating people up with words. Sorry, you're barking up the wrong tree. I have a pretty full life with a lot more to worry about than trying to win an argument in a comment thread on a blog that is read by about 40 people daily. However, when I feel my belief system is intentionally misrepresented with the intent of making someone look bad, I will fight back, not because I want to "win", but because I'm proud of and stand for my beliefs.

All this despite the fact that I've never limited your ability to comment what you want on this blog, no matter how ridiculous your words sound to me.

If this analysis doesn't agree with you, that's perfectly fine with me. It's a free country.

Exactly, and you never answered the question.

For the record, I'm a Republican of course I know my parties platform and beliefs just like I suppose you know the Democrat's.

However, I was asking for YOUR vision of the Republican ideology, hence the according to you part of the question.

Why you felt the need to ask me instead of answering is what I don't get. Like i said before in a comment that for some reason didn't post - so your view of Republicans is small government and a strong military. How do you reconcile that with hating women and being a racist? For the record, and yes I'm a nit picker conversationist, that was HALF of your view of Republican ideology.

As for Robert, it's his blog, he can jump in at any time. You too, as Robert, have the choice to not take whatever bait you throw each other.

Look, LV, you did not ask me to give my version, okay? You asked "what is Republican ideology?" I was surprised you were asking given how much you know I delve into politics. So I wondered if you knew yourself and I asked.

Then Robert had to remind me that I don't answer questions with a question around here. Fine. I gave him two characteristics. You want more, LV, I'll be happy to provide them. But this exercise that you and Robert are making me go through feels more and more like a test the longer this thread goes on.

It's like me asking Robert what Democratic tenants are. I'm sure he knows them...so why ask?

But since you have to, apparently, persist...

Pro-gun
Pro-life (except for criminals)
Commitment to religion and family

Now you have five.

As far as being racist and hating women...well, these aren't "tenants" but based upon the size of Rush's audience and the decibels that the crowd generates at CPAC when they listen to him, let's just say they aren't things that a lot of Republicans get real upset about.

Rick, you'd be better serve re-reading my question (2nd comment to this post) to you which was and I quote "According to you what is Republican ideology? Just curious, given the fact I'm a Republican and I've never listened to Rush."

Now, if the use of according to you in a question does not elicit you to give your point of view I don't know how what does. The question could not have been more clear in that I was asking YOUR view.

So I'd appreciate the drop in the attitude. This is no test and we could've saved a lot of commenting if you had realized that according to you well meant your view.

Yeah, those aren't tenets BUT...

Rick lied, as he often lies, and now that he's called on it he does a little intellectual dance, as he often does, to rationalize the lie: Republicans are racists, because Rick KNOWS that Rush is racist, and Republicans agree with Rush about stuff that has nothing to do with race, so therefore...

Excuse me, I have to take a shower.
